Ausbildung Salary in Germany: How Much Do You Earn During Training and After Graduation?

Published by Unify Abroad · Salary and budget guide · Information checked: 21 October 2026

Ausbildung salary in Germany depends on your occupation, employer, training year and collective agreement. For covered dual training starting in 2026, the first-year statutory minimum is €724 gross a month; many employers pay more. For a 2027 start, that minimum rises to €764. Neither figure is take-home pay or a guarantee that your living costs are covered.

For Indian students, the useful question is how much remains after payroll deductions and German living expenses. A salary converted into rupees can look impressive while leaving little for savings. This guide helps you compare a real training offer with a realistic budget.

New to the route? Start with our Ausbildung beginner’s guide, then read the education, German and employer eligibility requirements.

Three different numbers matter: your contractual gross allowance, your estimated net payment, and your actual monthly spending. Visa financial-proof requirements are a separate check. Always compare all four before accepting an offer.

Ausbildung salary per month: how pay increases by year

In dual Ausbildung, the employer pays a monthly training allowance, called Ausbildungsvergütung. It normally increases as you move through training. Ask for each year’s amount in writing: a third-year figure in an advertisement does not tell you your first-year income.

Monthly statutory minimum gross allowances for covered BBiG/HwO training, by starting cohort
Training year Start in 2026 Start in 2027
Year 1 €724 €764
Year 2 €854 €902
Year 3 €977 €1,031
Year 4, where applicable €1,014 €1,070

Sources: BIBB’s 2026 minimum allowance announcement and 2027 announcement of 7 October 2026. These are legal floors for the relevant starting cohort, not nationwide averages. Collective-agreement exceptions apply; covered employers may follow applicable negotiated rates below the floor. Programmes governed by other professional rules need separate checks.

Read each column as one cohort’s progression: a person starting in 2026 does not automatically switch to the 2027 entrant column in January 2027. Your contract and applicable pay agreement determine payments, including later negotiated increases.

School-based training is different. Do not assume every programme pays an allowance. Some routes have no salary and may charge fees. Professional nursing has its own training and remuneration framework; nursing-assistant programmes are different again.

Why Ausbildung salary differs by occupation

Two people with the same Indian qualification can receive different offers because employers, regions and pay agreements differ. Even the same German job title can have different rates in industry and a craft business.

Published examples to compare—not an all-Germany salary scale
Occupation or example Published monthly training pay How to interpret it
IT: Fachinformatiker/in, application development Industry examples: year 1 €1,243–€1,373; year 2 €1,298–€1,408; year 3 €1,379–€1,489 BERUFENET profile dated 5 October 2026; regional variation. Craft-sector examples on the same profile are lower.
Hospitality: Sauerland hotel group Year 1 €1,200; year 2 €1,300; year 3 €1,400 Employer-group example stated as of August 2025; confirm the current offer and whether quoted amounts are gross before budgeting.
Professional nursing: Elisabeth-Krankenhaus, Erle 2026 vacancy advertises first-year pay from €1,490 One provider’s published example. Ask for the applicable gross pay table and later-year rates; it is not a promise for every healthcare route.
Technical trades and mechatronics Check the specific employer’s year-by-year gross pay table Industrial and craft employers can use different agreements. Do not treat an engineer’s salary as an apprentice allowance.
Logistics and warehouse training Check the exact German occupation and employer offer Compare base allowance separately from shift supplements and any accommodation charges.

Examples: Federal Employment Agency IT profile, Sauerland hotel training page and hospital’s September 2026 nursing vacancy. The official technical-sector guide and transport and logistics guide explain why employer, region and training year matter.

Choose an occupation you can see yourself practising. A higher allowance cannot compensate for a poor fit with patient care, shift work, technical tasks or customer service. For each shortlist entry, record the location, working hours, German requirement and housing arrangements beside the salary.

Gross vs net Ausbildung salary: what reaches your bank account?

Gross (brutto) is pay before deductions. Net (netto) is the amount after payroll deductions. Your employer normally handles deductions and shows them on your payslip.

Social security generally includes health, pension, unemployment and long-term care insurance. The employer also contributes. Income tax is separate: low-paid trainees may owe little or no income tax, but that does not remove social-insurance deductions. Higher pay, bonuses or other income can change the tax result.

Net pay depends on your circumstances, including tax class, health insurer, age, children, state and any applicable church tax. There is no reliable universal “all trainees keep 80%” rule. The official salary, tax and social-security guide explains payroll deductions and links to further calculation resources. Ask employer payroll for a personalised estimate using the correct year’s rules; an income-tax calculator alone may omit social insurance.

Illustration, not a payroll quote: if a €1,200 gross allowance has €260 in total payroll deductions, the resulting net amount is €940. If €150 for employer housing is then withheld separately, only €790 is transferred. Actual deductions must be confirmed; do not assume this example predicts your net pay.

Check whether accommodation or meals are supplied, charged separately, or treated as taxable benefits. Avoid counting the same housing expense twice. A headline “free accommodation” deserves a written explanation of utilities, deposits, room sharing and what happens if the training ends.

Can Ausbildung salary cover living expenses in Germany?

It can work with an affordable room and suitable pay, but it is not automatic. Rent is often the deciding expense. Compare actual housing near the workplace and vocational school, including late-shift travel, rather than a countrywide average.

DAAD’s accommodation guidance highlights the city gap: its student shared-room examples range from about €328 in Jena to €790 in Munich. These are reference examples, not current rental quotes or guaranteed accommodation for apprentices. Berlin and Frankfurt can also be difficult markets. Smaller locations may offer lower rent but a longer or more expensive commute.

Illustrative monthly budget after payroll deductions—not a market-price survey
Expense Lower-rent example Higher-rent example
Room and utilities €400 €700
Food and household purchases €250 €250
Local transport €60 €60
Phone and internet share €30 €30
Personal expenses, learning materials and reserve €110 €110
Total €850 €1,150
Balance if net income is €950 €100 left €200 short

These invented scenarios show the calculation to make with your own quotes. Statutory health insurance is assumed already deducted through payroll; do not add it twice. Add any costs absent from your actual arrangement, such as electricity, broadcasting contribution, medications or journeys home. Do not assume university accommodation or student discounts are available to apprentices.

You also need money before the first salary: German classes and exams, document preparation, any recognition costs, visa expenses, flights, temporary housing, rental deposit and initial household items. Keep an emergency reserve. A monthly surplus does not solve an upfront cash shortage.

Does a paid Ausbildung contract remove the need for financial proof?

No. The official vocational-training visa guidance currently lists the following 2026 livelihood amounts:

  • Company-based training: an allowance of at least €1,048 gross or €822 net per month is treated as securing livelihood.
  • Insufficient company allowance: the gap can be covered using a blocked account or a declaration of commitment, subject to the authority’s assessment.
  • School-based training: at least €959 net per month must be available; accepted evidence can include a blocked account, scholarship or declaration of commitment.

These are immigration benchmarks, not recommended spending budgets. Meeting one does not mean a room in Munich is affordable. Conversely, statutory minimum training pay may be lawful while falling below the immigration benchmark.

For illustration, if the authority accepts €750 net as your available training income against an €822 monthly benchmark, the arithmetic gap is €72 per month. Over 12 months that is €864. This is an explanation of a shortfall, not an instruction to deposit that amount: the mission decides the accepted income, period and evidence.

Recheck the responsible German mission’s checklist when applying, particularly for a 2027 start. The newly announced 2027 training-pay floors do not establish 2027 visa thresholds. A visa for searching for a training place is a separate route. Our Ausbildung eligibility guide helps you organise the other checks.

Salary after Ausbildung: what can a qualified worker expect?

After completing training and securing a qualified job, you move from an apprentice allowance to an employment salary. The amount depends on occupation, region, working hours, collective agreement and employer. Completing Ausbildung does not itself guarantee an employment contract or a fixed salary.

As one sector reference, the official electronic and metal industry profile reports average gross skilled-worker pay of €3,288–€3,703 per month. These are sector reference figures, not guaranteed starting salaries. The Sauerland hotel group advertises starting pay after training from approximately €2,700; confirm its current gross/net basis and offer terms directly.

For nursing, IT, hospitality or logistics, compare current vacancies for the precise qualified role. Use the Federal Employment Agency’s Entgeltatlas for occupation and region context, remembering that a median covering experienced workers is not a new graduate’s starting offer.

Ask for basic gross monthly salary, weekly hours, annual guaranteed payments, probation terms and separately listed shift or overtime supplements. A €36,000 annual gross offer paid in 12 equal instalments means €3,000 gross monthly; it does not mean €3,000 net. Strong German, relevant skills and further qualifications can support progression, but future increases need evidence rather than a fixed promise.

“Earn ₹2 lakh a month while studying”: questions to ask

Such claims often mix training allowances, qualified-worker salaries, overtime and currency conversion. Before relying on an income claim, ask:

  • Which stage? First-year trainee, final-year trainee or experienced qualified worker?
  • Which pay basis? Gross, net or money left after rent and food?
  • Which contract? Named employer, occupation, location, hours and start date?
  • Which extras? Are tips, bonuses and shift payments guaranteed or merely possible?
  • Which currency assumption? What dated exchange rate is used, and are transfer charges included?
  • Which costs? Language preparation, relocation, deposits, service fees and monthly expenses?

For arithmetic only, at an assumed—not current—rate of ₹100 per euro, €1,200 gross equals ₹1.2 lakh gross. If net pay is €950 and spending is €850, the remaining €100 equals ₹10,000 at that same assumed rate. The headline conversion and actual savings answer different questions.

Keep the working budget in euros. Treat guaranteed large remittances, universal tax-free pay, automatic visa approval and guaranteed high-paying jobs as claims requiring written evidence. Do not make an unaffordable plan depend on a second job or uncertain overtime.

Before accepting an offer: your salary checklist

  1. Get the exact German occupation, employer, location and training route.
  2. Obtain gross monthly pay for every training year and the applicable agreement.
  3. Ask payroll for an estimated net payment and a list of housing or meal deductions.
  4. Find real accommodation and commute quotes; calculate your monthly balance.
  5. Separate relocation costs and emergency savings from monthly spending.
  6. Confirm visa financial proof and any shortfall with the responsible authority.
  7. Read repayment clauses and fees carefully before signing or paying.

Frequently asked questions about Ausbildung salary

Is Ausbildung salary the same for Indian and German trainees?

There is no universal separate Indian-student pay scale. Compare the employer’s contract and applicable training/pay rules. Nationality alone does not establish one fixed allowance.

Is Ausbildung salary tax-free?

Not automatically. Some trainees owe little or no income tax at their income level, while social-security contributions normally still apply. Check your individual payroll calculation.

Can I send money to my family in India during training?

Only budget remittances after confirmed net income, local expenses and an emergency reserve. Some offers leave little or no surplus, especially where rent is high.

Is €1,000 a month enough?

First establish whether that means gross or net. Then price housing, transport and everyday costs in the actual location. A single national yes/no answer would be misleading.

Do I always need a blocked account?

No. Adequate company-training income can establish livelihood under the applicable rules. A shortfall may require additional accepted proof. School-based and training-place-search routes have different requirements.

What is the minimum for a 2027 start?

BIBB lists €764 gross monthly in year one for covered 2027 entrants, followed by €902, €1,031 and €1,070 in later years where applicable, subject to the relevant framework and exceptions. Confirm your employer’s actual pay.
