Germany FAQs

Is studying in Germany really free?
At most public universities, yes — tuition is free or limited to a small semester fee (typically €150–€350), even for international students. You mainly budget for living costs. Private universities do charge tuition.
Do I need to know German to study there?
Many master's and some bachelor's programmes are taught entirely in English. However, learning basic German helps with daily life, part-time work and integration — and is required for German-taught courses.
What is a blocked account?
A blocked account (Sperrkonto) is where you deposit roughly €11,208 to prove you can cover one year of living costs. The money is released to you in monthly instalments after you arrive.
Can I work in Germany after graduating?
Yes — graduates get an 18-month job-search visa to find work related to their degree. Once employed, you can transition to a work permit or EU Blue Card, with a pathway to permanent residency.
