A safe European capital, a state medical university that has trained Indian doctors since 1987, and FMGE results above the national average. Total cost: roughly ₹30–50 lakh.
Why MBBS in Armenia?
Medical education in Armenia is centred on Yerevan. Yerevan State Medical University (YSMU) is the country's only state medical university and took its first batch of Indian students in 1987, under an agreement between India and the Soviet Union. Several hundred Indian students study there today.
Results are the main reason families look at Armenia. In the NBEMS 2024 FMGE data, YSMU graduates passed at 32.76% (152 of 464), compared with a national average of 15–25% for foreign medical graduates. The private universities in Yerevan cost less but vary much more in quality, so the choice of university matters as much as the choice of country.
- State university with nearly 40 years of Indian graduates
- English-medium General Medicine programme
- YSMU tuition fixed for the full course
- No donation or capitation fees
Important: The Embassy of India in Yerevan issued advisories in November 2021 and February 2022 asking students to take precautions with St. Tereza Medical University. We do not recommend it. Always check the Embassy's current advisories before paying any fee.

In Armenia, the university matters more than the country
Armenia has one state medical university and several private ones, and outcomes differ widely between them. YSMU's FMGE results are well above the national average for foreign graduates; some private universities produce far weaker numbers. A lower fee is not a saving if the degree does not lead to registration in India.
YSMU is also more selective. It runs its own entrance test and has a fixed number of seats for international students, so strong applicants should apply early in the cycle.
- Ask for the university's FMGE results from NBEMS, not a brochure figure
- Check the Indian Embassy in Yerevan's current advisories
- Confirm the internship is at the same university's hospitals
- Prepare for YSMU's entrance test if it is your first choice
Armenia MBBS FAQs
Is NEET mandatory for MBBS in Armenia?
Yes. A valid NEET-UG qualifying score is required by the NMC for every Indian student studying medicine abroad. YSMU also runs its own entrance test on top of NEET.
Is an MBBS from Armenia valid in India?
Yes, if the programme meets every condition of the NMC's FMGL Regulations 2021 and you clear FMGE or NExT after returning. Armenian universities award a Doctor of Medicine degree, which is accepted as the equivalent of MBBS when those conditions are met.
Do I need to learn Armenian or Russian?
Not for your lectures, which are in English. During clinical years you will meet patients who speak Armenian or Russian, so universities include language classes and most students pick up enough to manage.
What is the total cost of MBBS in Armenia?
Roughly ₹30–50 lakh for six years, including tuition and living costs. YSMU charges AMD 2,600,000 a year for its English-medium programme and keeps that fee the same for the whole course. Private universities charge less.
Should I consider St. Tereza Medical University?
We do not recommend it. The Embassy of India in Yerevan issued advisories about the university in 2021 and 2022, citing concerns including academic record-keeping.
Is Armenia safe for Indian students?
Yerevan is a calm, safe city with a long-established Indian student community. Border regions have seen tension in the past, so students should follow the Indian Embassy's advisories and register with the Embassy on arrival. Winters are cold and summers are hot and dry.
