Study MBBS in TajikistanStudy MBBS in Tajikistan
One of the lowest-cost MBBS options in Central Asia, with English-medium teaching at public universities in Dushanbe and the same six-year curriculum model used in Russia. Total cost: ₹18–30 lakh.
Why MBBS in Tajikistan?
Tajikistan has a small number of medical universities, most of them public and based in the capital, Dushanbe. Tuition for international students generally runs between $3,500 and $4,500 a year, and hostel places cost $500–$800 a year, which puts the full course well below most other MBBS destinations.
The trade-offs are real. The Indian student community is smaller than in Russia or Uzbekistan, there are fewer services set up for foreign students, and patients in teaching hospitals speak Tajik or Russian. For a family on a tight budget it can make sense, but only with careful university selection.
- Tuition of roughly $3,500–$4,500 a year
- Public universities with English-medium programmes
- Six-year curriculum on the Russian model
- No donation or capitation fees
Our honest take: Tajikistan is a budget destination, not a prestige one. If cost is your main constraint and you are ready to learn basic Russian or Tajik for clinical work, it deserves a place on your list. If you can stretch your budget, we will show you how it compares with Russia, Georgia and Nepal before you decide.

What to check before you pick a university
The biggest variable in Tajikistan is not the fee. It is whether the university can show you, in writing, that its English-medium programme meets FMGL 2021: at least 54 months of study, a 12-month internship at the same institution, and graduates eligible for a Tajik licence to practise.
Ask how many of the university's Indian graduates sat FMGE last year and how many passed. NBEMS publishes institution-wise results, and for smaller destinations like Tajikistan the numbers can swing a lot from year to year. We share the latest figures for every university we shortlist.
- Get FMGL compliance confirmed in writing, not just verbally
- Check institution-wise FMGE results from NBEMS
- Ask about Russian or Tajik language classes for clinical years
- Confirm hostel heating and Indian food options for the winter months
Tajikistan MBBS FAQs
Is NEET mandatory for MBBS in Tajikistan?
Yes. Some agents say otherwise, but the NMC requires a valid NEET-UG qualifying score for any Indian student studying medicine abroad. Without it you cannot sit FMGE/NExT and cannot practise in India.
Are Tajik medical universities recognised by the NMC?
The NMC no longer publishes an approved list. Instead, your degree must meet every condition of the FMGL Regulations 2021. Several Tajik universities admit Indian students, but compliance has to be checked for each one. We do this before any university goes on your shortlist.
Is the course fully in English?
Lectures are in English at the universities we work with. During clinical rotations, patients speak Tajik or Russian, so students take language classes in the early years. Basic Russian is the more useful of the two.
What is the total cost of MBBS in Tajikistan?
Usually ₹18–30 lakh for six years, covering tuition, hostel, food, insurance and visa costs. Tuition is roughly $3,500–$4,500 a year. There are no donation or capitation fees.
What are FMGE results like for Tajikistan graduates?
The numbers are small and vary by university and year. NBEMS publishes institution-wise FMGE results, and we share the latest data for each university we recommend so you can judge for yourself.
Is Tajikistan safe for Indian students?
Dushanbe and the main university towns are generally calm, and students rarely report safety problems. Areas close to the Afghan border are best avoided. Winters are cold, so warm clothing and a well-heated hostel matter. We advise students to register with the Embassy of India in Dushanbe on arrival.
