Study MBBS in Vietnam

Low fees, short flights from India and a growing set of English-medium medicine programmes. Vietnam is worth a look, as long as you understand the language and licensing rules before you apply. Total cost: ₹25–45 lakh.

Overview

Why MBBS in Vietnam?

Vietnam has around 20 medical universities, and a handful of them now run English-medium medicine programmes for Indian students. Tuition at these universities usually falls between $3,000 and $5,500 a year, and living costs in cities like Can Tho, Da Nang and Ho Chi Minh City are close to what a student would spend in a mid-sized Indian city.

It is also close to home. Flights from Delhi, Mumbai and Kolkata take roughly four to six hours, and the tropical climate will feel familiar to most Indian students. The Indian student community is still small compared with Russia or Georgia, but it has grown quickly over the last three years.

  • English-medium programmes at selected universities
  • Tuition of roughly $3,000–$5,500 a year
  • No donation or capitation fees
  • Short flights and a familiar climate

Read this before you decide: In 2026 the Consulate General of India in Ho Chi Minh City issued an advisory for Indian students. Clinical training in Vietnam involves patients who speak Vietnamese, so you need working Vietnamese. To get a licence to practise in Vietnam, graduates must complete 12 months of hospital practice after the degree and, from 2027, pass a national licensing exam that is likely to be held in Vietnamese. NMC's FMGL Regulations 2021 require you to be eligible to practise in the country where you studied, so this affects your Indian registration too. We take every family through this before they apply.

Something to know before you decide

The language question, answered honestly

Lectures in the English-medium programmes are in English. Hospital work is different: patients, nurses and most hospital paperwork use Vietnamese. Universities that take Indian students run Vietnamese language classes in the early years, and how seriously a student takes those classes has a direct effect on their clinical training.

The 2027 licensing exam raises the stakes. A graduate who cannot get a Vietnamese licence may face questions about FMGL eligibility on returning to India. Until the NMC or the Indian Embassy clarifies how the new exam applies to Indian graduates, we treat it as an open risk and say so plainly.

  • Plan for one to two years of serious Vietnamese language study
  • Ask the university, in writing, how it prepares students for the 2027 exam
  • Confirm the 12-month internship is at the same university's hospitals
  • Compare Vietnam against lower-risk options before paying any fee

Vietnam MBBS FAQs

Is NEET mandatory for MBBS in Vietnam?

Yes. Vietnamese universities may not ask for NEET, but the NMC does. Without a valid NEET qualifying score you cannot sit the FMGE/NExT on your return, which means you cannot register to practise in India.

Is an MBBS from Vietnam valid in India?

Only if the programme meets every condition in the NMC's FMGL Regulations 2021: at least 54 months of study, a 12-month internship at the same institution, English as the medium of instruction, and eligibility to register as a doctor in Vietnam. After that, you still need to clear FMGE or NExT. We check each condition university by university.

Do I need to learn Vietnamese?

Yes. Your lectures can be in English, but clinical training involves Vietnamese-speaking patients, and the national licensing exam from 2027 is expected to be in Vietnamese. Treat the language as part of the course, not an optional extra.

What is the 2027 licensing exam?

Vietnam is introducing a national competency exam that doctors must pass to get a licence to practise. According to the Indian Consulate in Ho Chi Minh City, it will likely be conducted in Vietnamese and follows 12 months of hospital practice after graduation.

What is the total cost of MBBS in Vietnam?

Usually ₹25–45 lakh for the full six years, including tuition, hostel and living costs. Tuition is roughly $3,000–$5,500 a year depending on the university. There are no donation or capitation fees at the universities we work with.

Is Vietnam safe for Indian students?

Vietnam is generally considered safe, with low levels of violent crime in university cities. Central Vietnam has a typhoon and flood season from roughly September to November. We advise every student to register with the Indian Embassy in Hanoi or the Consulate in Ho Chi Minh City on arrival.
