What IELTS Actually Tests
IELTS — the International English Language Testing System — is the English-proficiency test most universities and immigration authorities in the UK, Canada, Australia, Ireland, and several other countries ask for. It tests four skills — listening, reading, writing, and speaking — and scores you on a band scale from 0 to 9, in half-band steps. There's no pass or fail — just the band your university or visa office has set as its cutoff.
There are two versions, and picking the right one matters. IELTS Academic is for university admission. IELTS General Training is for work, migration, and some vocational programs. Listening and Speaking are identical either way — Reading and Writing differ. If you're applying to a degree program, you almost certainly need Academic, but we'll confirm that against your actual offer letter rather than assume.
Not everyone needs IELTS at all. Some universities accept PTE, TOEFL, or Duolingo instead, or waive the requirement for English-medium applicants. We won't tell you to book a test your specific program doesn't require — that's exactly what our free counselling session is for.
IELTS Test Format, Section by Section
| Section | Duration | Structure | Assesses |
|---|---|---|---|
| Listening | 30 min | 4 parts, 40 questions | Comprehension across accents |
| Reading | 60 min | 3 long passages (Academic) / 5–6 texts (GT), 40 questions | Detail, inference, main ideas |
| Writing | 60 min | 2 tasks — graph/letter + essay | Task response, coherence, grammar, vocabulary |
| Speaking | 11–14 min | 3 parts, face-to-face with an examiner | Fluency, vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation |
Total test time: 2 hours 45 minutes. Figures above are sourced from British Council's official test-format pages — always confirm exact timings with your test centre before booking.
Understanding Band Scores
Your overall band is the average of your four skill scores, rounded to the nearest half band. Roughly, band 9 is "Expert user," band 7 is "Good user" with occasional inaccuracies, and band 5 is "Modest user" who copes with overall meaning but makes frequent mistakes.
| Destination | Undergraduate (typical) | Postgraduate (typical) |
|---|---|---|
| USA | ~6.0–6.5 overall | ~6.5–7.5+ overall |
| UK | ~6.0–6.5 overall | ~6.5–7.0 (Russell Group often 7.0+) |
| Canada | ~6.0–6.5 overall | ~6.5–7.0 overall |
| Australia | ~6.0–6.5 overall | ~6.5–7.0 overall |
Please read this table as a starting point, not a promise. Every number here depends on the specific university, program, and intake. We'll check the actual requirement for your shortlisted university with you — and you should verify it yourself on the university's official admissions page too.
