What PTE Academic Actually Tests

PTE Academic (Pearson Test of English Academic) tests reading, writing, listening, and speaking in a single two-hour sitting, fully delivered on a computer. Most of your score — pronunciation and fluency — is graded by AI; since a 2025 scoring update, content on seven of the core speaking and writing tasks also gets a human review, with a second reviewer stepping in whenever the AI and the first human disagree. It's AI-first with a human check, not the fully automated black box some competitor pages describe.

Australia and most UK and Canadian universities accept PTE Academic directly for admission. But two distinctions matter and are easy to get wrong. For a UK visa specifically, you need PTE Academic UKVI, not standard PTE Academic — only the UKVI version is on the Home Office's approved SELT list. And for Canada's Express Entry or PR points, IRCC wants PTE Core, a separate test — not PTE Academic. Booking the wrong version wastes both your fee and your calendar.

Understanding PTE Scores

PTE Academic is scored 10–90 overall, and can also be read against the CEFR scale: 10–29 is A1, 30–42 is A2, 43–58 is B1, 59–75 is B2, 76–84 is C1, and 85–90 is C2. Destination requirements vary by specific university and course, not just by country.

PTE Academic FAQs

PTE Academic vs PTE Core — what's the difference?
These are different tests for different purposes. PTE Academic is used for university admissions and is accepted by institutions in Australia, the UK, and other destinations. PTE Core is a separate test built specifically for Canada's Express Entry and PR points system through IRCC — it isn't accepted for most university admissions. Booking the wrong one is a common and costly mistake; we confirm which one your specific goal requires before you register.
Is PTE harder or easier than IELTS?
Neither is universally harder. PTE is fully computer-delivered with AI-led scoring, which some students find less stressful than IELTS's face-to-face speaking test — but it also moves fast, with less time to think between tasks. We help you choose based on your own strengths, not a blanket recommendation.
Is PTE really scored "all by AI"?
Not entirely — this is a common misconception. How fast do PTE results come back?
Typically within 48 hours of your test, sometimes faster — one of PTE's advantages over some other English-proficiency tests.
Do I need PTE Academic UKVI or standard PTE Academic for the UK?
For UK university admission, standard PTE Academic is usually enough. But if your route requires a Secure English Language Test (SELT) — most UK visa applications do — you specifically need PTE Academic UKVI, not the standard version. Only the UKVI version appears on the UK Home Office's approved SELT list. We help you confirm which one your visa route actually needs before you book.
Can I retake PTE, and what does it cost?
There's no official cap on how many times you can retake PTE Academic. The fee changes periodically, so rather than quote a figure that may already be stale, we confirm the current fee with you directly at the time of booking.
