TOEFL Preparation That Starts With Telling You the Truth
We'll walk you through the current TOEFL iBT format, help you figure out if it's actually the right test for where you're applying, and only put you through prep you actually need.

What TOEFL iBT Actually Tests
TOEFL iBT is the English-proficiency test ETS built around academic, classroom English — the kind of listening, reading, writing, and speaking you'll actually do once you're sitting in a lecture hall abroad. It's scored out of 120, and since the exam's January 2026 redesign, it's also reported on a simpler 1–6 band scale mapped to CEFR levels. If a university specifically asks for TOEFL — not "TOEFL or IELTS" — this is the one you take.
Who actually needs it: mostly students applying to the US, and increasingly Canada, where TOEFL has traditionally been the more commonly requested test. Plenty of UK, Australian, Irish, and German universities accept it too — but always check the specific program's requirement page, since "accepts TOEFL" and "prefers TOEFL" are different things.
How it differs from IELTS: TOEFL is entirely computer-based — you speak into a microphone rather than to a real examiner — it's mostly multiple-choice and short-response, and since January 2026 it's adaptive, meaning the difficulty of your Reading and Listening questions adjusts in real time based on how you're doing. Neither test is universally "harder." We'll tell you honestly which one suits you better, not just sell you whichever one we have a batch starting for.
TOEFL iBT Format — Effective January 2026
| Section | Duration | Tasks | Assesses |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reading | ~30 min (adaptive) | ~50 items — Complete the Words, Read in Daily Life, Read an Academic Passage | Vocabulary & reading comprehension |
| Listening | ~29 min (adaptive) | ~47 items across 4 task types | Conversational & lecture comprehension |
| Writing | ~23 min | 12 items — Build a Sentence, Write an Email, Write for an Academic Discussion | Grammar, professional & academic writing |
| Speaking | ~8 min | ~11 items — Listen and Repeat, Take an Interview | Pronunciation, fluency |
Total: roughly 90 minutes of test content, under two hours at the centre. Order: Reading → Listening → Writing → Speaking — a change from the pre-2026 order. ETS shortened and redesigned TOEFL iBT again on 21 January 2026; if you're comparing notes with someone who took it even a year ago, their experience won't match this. Always confirm exact minute counts on ETS's live test-taker page.
Understanding Your Score
TOEFL scores each section 0–30 (0–120 total), and since January 2026 also reports an overall and per-section band from 1–6, aligned loosely to CEFR levels — band 6 sits around C1/C2, bands 4–5 around B1/B2, bands 1–2 around A1/A2. Treat this band-to-CEFR mapping as a rough guide, not an official conversion chart.
| Destination | Broad typical range (0–120 scale) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| USA | ~80–100 most programs; ~100–110+ competitive | Individual sections often matter as much as the total |
| UK | ~72–92 most; ~90–110 Russell Group | Check visa-specific rules separately from admissions rules |
| Canada | ~80–100 most | Some universities set a per-section minimum around 20–22 |
| Australia | ~79–100 depending on program | Go8 universities tend toward the higher end |
We're deliberately vague on exact single numbers — a specific school's cutoff for a specific intake is the kind of fact that changes, and only that school's own admissions page can confirm it reliably. If we quote you a hard number in counselling, it's because we checked the actual program page that week.
